In 1992, Grey Pierson bought the GWF from Max Andrews. at the time, Eddie Gilbert was the heavyweight champion. Eddie was upset over a few things in the changing of ownership so he took the title to Memphis where he faced the Unified World champion Jerry "The King" Lawler to merge the titles. The Unified Title started at Super Clash 3 on Pay-Per-View from Chicago, Illinois where AWA World Champion Jerry "The King" Lawler defeated World Class World Champion "Modern Day Warrior" Kerry Von Erich. That title was held by some of the best wrestlers in the industry like Owen Hart, Razor Ramon, Sid Vicious, Jeff Jarrett, Jerry "The King" Lawler, "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert and many more. The title was defended all over until the USWA closed in 1997. Since then, the title was vacant until 2020 when it was brought back with the new champion, Lou Gotti.
